Nadi Nader

As a Structural Designer at Forell | Elsesser, Nadi is passionate about designing sustainable and resilient structures for the built environment. Nadi received his Bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine and his Master’s in Structural Engineering from UC Berkeley. Early in his academic career, he worked on many research projects focused on sustainable materials and earthquake engineering. As a graduate student, Nadi focused on refining his understanding of seismic loading and alternative and common construction materials. Understanding the different materials used in construction has allowed him to analyze various environmental impacts, and how they can be used to improve structures.

Outside of work, Nadi enjoys playing soccer, hiking, biking, and traveling the world.

Customized Solution

Forell | Elsesser Engineers provided structural engineering services for the 102,000 sf Teaching and Learning Complex at UC Davis. The Design-Build project is a modern building with various academic learning spaces to encourage student collaboration. The four-story building includes dedicated laboratory teaching space for research into emerging pedagogies and new technologies, a 425-seat auditorium, two 180-seat lecture halls, and flexible learning and office space. This project has achieved LEED Gold certification.

  • Climate responsive design was integrated into every aspect of the building, including the south side canopy structure which leverages a double-sided solar array. The design of the steel canopy structure took into consideration the PV panel configuration, maintenance walk paths and louver support. The design helped reduce material and save cost.
  • The piano nobile underneath the south canopy integrates both stairs and stadium seating. The space is designed to encourage student interaction and to provide additional collaboration space. To ensure the design goals were met, F|E worked closely with Smithgroup and DPR on the functionality, aesthetics and constructility of the piano nobile.
  • In support of reaching aggressive sustainability goals set by UC Davis, F|E provided unique structural design solutions for the highly efficient building envelope system. The innovative system uses fiberglass attachments to minimize energy loss. F|E worked closely with Smithgroup and DPR to provide the supporting structure for the building envelop system, especially in the areas with the tall two-story glass and the transition between south piano nobile and the main building where special jointing of building façade is required.
