Forell | Elsesser provided complete structural engineering services for this new, 493,000 s.f. 8-story combined City and San Jose State University Library which is the largest university/City library in the United States.
Customized Solution
- This building contains a deceptively simple and efficient structural system, while still incorporating dramatic architectural elements. These elements include an irregular floor plan, a 7-story interior atrium, a central open-air courtyard, exterior cantilevered canopies, and a long-span Vierendeel truss to open up the main public entrance to the library located below.
- The flexibility and openness of the interior spaces have been achieved by carefully coordinating the vertical transit systems and the mechanical chases with the eccentric-braced frame lateral system to produce four highly efficient and concentrated cores within the building.
