Kaiser Permanente Data Center

This 2-story existing healthcare data center was expanded to accommodate additional mechanical and server spaces. The building is designed to remain fully operational after an earthquake and all construction was conducted while the existing data center remained live.
 
Customized Solution
  • Forell | Elsesser provided structural engineering services for Phase 3 of the Kaiser Permanente Data Center includes two new steel-framed buildings designed to “essential facility” standards.  The 1- and 2- story buildings house the facility’s Central Utility Plant (CUP), mechanical and electrical equipment such as chillers, air handling units, batteries, and emergency generators, which will support the functions of the existing data center.
  • This project also added 60,000 s.f. of additional raised access floor to the original building for a total of 120,000 s.f. of raised access flooring within the larger 159,000 s.f. existing structure.
  • Detailed coordination was essential with the existing data center, including the existing building structure, site underground utility conditions, and equipment structures.  This was addressed by the design team by designing the entire project using BIM.
